Democracy Reform Primer Series

The primers narrow the gap between research and public dialogue to responsibly advance conversations and strategy about proposed changes to our political institutions. Produced in a partnership between Johns Hopkins University’s School of Government and Policy and the University of Chicago’s Center for Effective Government, each primer focuses on a particular reform idea, clarifies its intended purposes, and critically evaluates what the best available research has to say about it.

Governing the AI Transition

The Governing the AI Transition (GAIT) initiative addresses one of the most consequential challenges facing governments today: how to govern powerful AI systems in ways that protect and strengthen democratic institutions. GAIT develops practical, politically viable approaches to AI governance, building the policy, regulatory, and institutional frameworks that governments, industry, and civil society need to manage this transition effectively. Through research, training, and direct engagement with government and industry partners, GAIT’s objective is to turn ideas into impact.

Mayors AI Forum

Established by Bloomberg Philanthropies with Johns Hopkins University, the initiative is the first of its kind to bring together mayors from across the globe to shape how AI is developed and deployed—accelerating practical applications in government, working directly with companies as tools are designed, and shaping policy from the economic centers where its promise is consequential and its impacts are immediate.
