Mark Fussell has over three decades of experience in public health leadership, international development, and academic administration.
He leads three academic centers focused on data, innovation and research collaboration, overseeing programs that connect cutting-edge research to practical solutions for cities and communities. His expertise spans strategy, program management, operations, and the translation of academic research into actionable public policy.
Before joining JHU in 2022, Mark served as deputy director and COO of ICAP, a large global health center at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health from 2010-2021. In this capacity, he oversaw operations across 26 country offices with over 2,000 staff across sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America, while managing large grant portfolios in public health research, training, and technical assistance programs.
Mark’s foundation in public health was built during his 19-year tenure with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he served as a senior public health advisor in various capacities. His CDC experience included secondments to local and state health departments and the World Health Organization, as well as deputy director positions in Zimbabwe and Guatemala, focusing on program planning, management, and public health services delivery.
A Miami native with degrees from Florida State University and the University of Miami, Mark has lived and worked across four continents, including extended periods in Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Guatemala, and the UAE.
